TIPS FOR A SOPHISTICATED & FUNCTIONAL NURSERY

One of our favorite design projects at CAROLYNLEONA is creating the perfect nursery for new moms.   As a mom of twin toddlers, I know how important it is to create a space that is stylish and fun, while being practical with room to grow. Here are CL’s top 5 tips when putting together your soon-to-be favorite space!

TIP 1 // A PLACE FOR YOU AND YOUR BABE

It is important to create a space that is fun and playful, but also keep in mind that this is the space where you (parents, we’re talking to you!) will be spending most of your time over the next year.  Don’t forget to include furniture that is comfortable for feedings and for spending some quality time with your little one. This should be a serene and relaxing space that you look forward to spending time in.

TIP 2 // KEEP IT FUNCTIONAL

Functionality is KEY!  Having your nursery organized and all necessities easily accessible will be a huge time saver.  A dresser is a great piece that can be both beautiful and functional. This will keep you organized and make it easy to grab what you need quickly.  Utilizing the top drawers for go-to items like diapers and baby wipes is a clever way to keep these items out of sight, but easy to reach.

Don’t forget that practical items can be stylish too.  Baskets are also a great use of storage and can keep the space clutter free and cute!

In terms of lighting, blackout curtains and a dimmer switch on your light fixture are a must!  While letting the natural light in during play time is great, most babies and toddlers won’t nap well in a brightly lit room.

As much as we all want our little ones to stay babies forever, there will come a time where they need to transition from their nursery to their big kid room.  When choosing the furniture for your nursery, think about where you want to invest in the long term. Consider purchasing a dresser, instead of a traditional changing table.  They can use this as they grow and it is a great source for storage!

TIP 3 // NECESSARY, BUT NOT NECESSARILY STYLISH

Let’s be real for a second…  there are a handful of baby items we know are must-haves, but the thought of them being displayed out in the open gives us major anxiety.  Get creative with the placement of specific items (ie: a diaper pail and a sound machine). Both of these items are absolutely necessary for your baby’s nursery, but they definitely don’t need to pull focus from your beautiful space you have worked so hard on.  Think of larger pieces of furniture that these items can be tucked behind and out of sight.

TIP 4 // DURABILITY

Durability and comfort are essential when shopping  for the big ticket items in your nursery. Think about materials that will stand up to the test of time - soft but cleanable rug and performance fabric on a glider/rocker. When accidents happen (and trust me, they will happen often) you want a worry free clean up experience.

TIP 5 // MAKE A STATEMENT

Wallpaper is a great way to customize your space and give it personality.  Pick a focal point in the room (ie: behind the crib), make a statement and have fun with it!
